They were horrified by the radical anti-clerical revolutionary direction and raised troops against the new national army. The term could also denote rural, anti-revolutionary, pro-royalist sentiment in general.[1]
In 1793, the French Assassin Arno Dorian infiltrated a house occupied by the Chouans, and discovered intel about them for the Council.[2]
