Chen Wu (陳五) was an elderly man from Changshan who served as a caretaker in the household of Yan Gaoqing, specifically attending to the grand protector's son Yan Jiming. Because of this, Jiming would always address him as Uncle Chen (陳伯).
As Chen Wu was recuperating from his injuries at the Mohist village, he was spared from the Battle of Changshan, where Gaoqing and Jiming were captured and executed on An Lushan's orders. Seeking revenge for the deaths of his lord and young master, Chen Wu, alongside six surviving Changshan soldiers, joined Li E to seek aid from Yan Zhenqing, Gaoqing's cousin and the Grand Protector of Pingyuan Commandery.[1]
In 758, a year after Li E's assassination of An Lushan, Chen Wu and other soldiers loyal to Yan joined Li E's new group of Hidden Ones. After He Hong'er's initiation, Chen Wu joined Li E and the others as they performed a leap of faith.[2]
