Cerros is a former Mayan settlement located on a peninsula in northern Belize, bordering the Caribbean Sea.
Cerros was founded sometime around 350 BC, when it was an important trading center for ships traveling up the coast. In its heyday, the city housed more than thousand people, its prominence demonstrated by its architecture. Cerros boasts stepped pyramids, stone carvings, temples and two ball courts.
By the time of the 17th century, it was considered Spanish territory, though it would later go on to become part of the British Honduras. In 1774, the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton visited Cerros, having followed clues from a sailor nicknamed Peg Leg that would lead to the rumored treasure of William Kidd. After navigating through the island's ruins, he was able to obtain Captain Kidd's Sawtooth Cutlass.
