In 1521, the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived on the island with the main goal of locating an artifact left behind by the Isu. He met the local leader Rajah Humabon and converted him and the local population to Catholicism with an idea to turn Cebu in a Spanish colony. When Magellan was able to locate the artifact on the island, Humabon revealed to him that it was merely a fragment of a larger artifact which had been seized by Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain of the neighboring Mactan Island.
