A naval captain is the commander of a ship. While most captains serve in a nation's navy, throughout history there have also been numerous independent captains, most notably privateers and pirates. Sometimes, an individual may command more than just one ship at a time and serve as the captain of an entire fleet, in which case they hold the title of admiral.
