Burgh Castle is an Anglo-Saxon castle near Norwich in the Kingdom of East Anglia. During the Viking expansion of the 9th Century, it was controlled by Rued.
History
Around 873 CE, the Viking Eivor led a large assault on the castle which resulted in the defeat of Rued and freeing of Oswald of East Anglia. The Vikings Finnr and Valdis, Oswald's betrothed, also assisted. Finnr fought at the front with Eivor while Valdis led an attack from the rear. Eivor faced Rued in combat and defeated him. Once Oswald was free, he requested Rued be spared. He and Valdis then traveled to Elmenham to be married.[1]
