The brig was a class of warship operated by, among others, the British, Spanish and Portuguese navies.
During the Golden Age of Piracy, the brig represented the perfect compromise between the more powerful frigate and Man O' War, and the faster schooner and gunboat. Each ship bore two masts, and was capable of fielding up to twenty-four guns over two decks; on top of this, they were fitted with a naval ram.
One notable brig in operation during this time was the Jackdaw, owned by the pirate named Edward Kenway. The Jackdaw was unique among its class for being significantly more well-armed and armored than other brigs, fielding armaments on a par with the Man O' War.
