Brendan of Clonfert (c. 484 – c. 577 CE) was a Celtic monk and Sage from Ireland who lived during the early Medieval period.
Biography
Brendan was born around 484 in Tralee to parents Finnlug and Cara.[1] From 530 to 537, he embarked on a pilgrimage, visiting many standing stones across England[2] and the Isle of Skye,[3] documenting his unknowing interactions with the Isu in messages he marked on rocks near places like Seahenge and Stonehenge. His "two and some year" journey ended in Vinland at the Tionontaté:ken Standing Stone. In his writing, Brendan made reference to "God's angel" denying him access.[2] After this revelation, he returned home to Ireland.[1]
Later in his life, he was responsible for establishing churches in many of the surrounding counties and founded Clonfert, Galway in 557. Twenty years later in 577, he passed away while visiting his sister Briga in Annaghdown and was buried in Clonfert Abbey.[1]
Legacy
Nearly two centuries later, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir found and completed his puzzles over the course of her own travels.[2]
