The beaver (Castor genus) is a large, semi-aquatic rodent distinct for their powerful front teeth and broad tail. Endemic to North America, they can be easily frightened but are not particularly good at detecting threats.[1]
Beavers were widely hunted across North America for their prized pelts and castoreum, the former of which were popularly used to make fashionable hats.[1][2] In the 18th century, typical methods of hunting beavers included employing snares, bait, and a bow. Owing to their small size, they were also vulnerable to poison darts.[1]
