Rye, or Secale cereale, is a grass cultivated as a grain and forage crop. As a grain, it is is utilized in the creation of many foods, alcohols, and animal fodder.
History[edit | edit source]
In Renaissance times, rye was collected by the Italian Assassins in Rome and used to brew whiskey.[1]
During the American Revolutionary War, rye was bought and sold as a raw material in the thirteen colonies. The Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton frequently gathered rye within his community of the Davenport Homestead from its farmers Prudence and Warren.[2] In fact, the Homestead's innkeepers Corrine and Oliver, and the doctor Lyle White were responsible for creating spirits and making Duffy's Elixir, respectively, through the use of rye.[3]
