I will agree with you that they could have given us a bigger pay-off for playing up to that point. But I have to say that they did a great job of creating a clean-slate for themselves to work with in future games, whilst also setting up a new plot-line. Because they don't have to worry about anymore end of the world stuff or Desmond, & even Vidic. Now they can expand on other things, such as other Assassins & Templars, Erudito & Juno. And they have a choice whether they wish to continue working on Shaun, Rebecca & William. Because they could always just exapand on them with databases within the game; I wouldn't advise them to go much further than that.
