For me Charlemagne could be easily be a puppet of the Templars but it's only my view.

The story of the Shrouds is complicated as in AC2 they implicitly link all this persons with this shroud and in ACS they said that Starrick used the shroud of Jesus, but maybe they refered to an artefact similar of the one used by Jesus and not the same one, it's never truly specify.
