Muhammad IV (died 1526) was the Hafsid Caliph of Ifriqiya, reigning from 1494 to 1526.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1511, Muhammad IV accepted bribes from the Templars to allow only Templar-approved merchants to bring goods into the markets of Tunis. However, these bribes were stolen by a team of Ottoman Assassins sent from Constantinople by Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and put to other uses.[1]
In response, the king imposed quotas and mandates on local farmers that served Templar goals rather than the citizens' needs. The Assassins again intervened, eliminating Muhammad's extortionists[2] and cooperating with several Tunisian community leaders to revive the country's crippled economy.[3]
