Haras (died 1189) was an Assassin apprentice of the Levantine Brotherhood who, after becoming dissatisfied with his slow progression through the Assassin ranks, defected to the Templar Order and helped them lay siege to Masyaf.
In 2012, his genetic memories were used as an Animi Avatar by the Templar company Abstergo Industries, for the training of their Animus recruits, under the title of the Crusader.
Biography
Assault on Masyaf
In 1189, Haras betrayed the Assassin Order and led an army of Templars to attack the Assassins' fortress of Masyaf. During the assault many Assassins were killed, and their Mentor, Al Mualim, was captured. Arriving back at Masyaf, the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad fought his way through the village and confronted Haras, who then threatened Altaïr with the death of Al Mualim.[1]
Promptly retreating to the now Templar-occupied fortress, Haras proceeded to execute the remaining Assassin hostages Vahid Ahmedi, Raşit El Zübeydi, and Fahd El Fehmi with his crossbow. Altaïr, who was locked outside the fortress by a portcullis gate, promptly scaled its walls and assassinated Haras.[1]
As he died, Haras continued to defy the Assassins, claiming that the Templars knew the truth about humanity and that the Assassins' Creed was wrong. Soon after, Haras passed away, his beliefs unchanged despite Altaïr's words.[1]
Legacy
In 2014, the Master Templar Juhani Otso Berg acknowledged Haras' betrayal of the Assassins and believed that his defection was a sign that there would always be Assassins willing to abandon their cause and serve the Templars.[2]
Personality and traits
According to Altaïr's suspicions, Haras was an arrogant and impatient man who sought the easy route instead of rightfully earning his place. He also had a reputation for being chameleon-like in combat, and could adapt his personality to suit others in order to find out their secrets.[3]
After losing faith in the Assassins, Haras was easily convinced to join their mortal enemies, the Templars. Following his defection, he held unquestionable loyalty in the Templars' cause, claiming that they knew the truth about humanity. In his quest to learn more about the 'artifact' sought by his master, he was willing to murder Al Mualim if he did not share his knowledge of the relic. He was also not above executing his former brothers to try and intimidate Al Mualim.[3]
However, Haras' ambitions could take over him at times, leading to him hastily taking the opportunity to join the forces of the Crusaders, donning their uniform as he betrayed his fellow Assassin brothers.[3]
Trivia
- Haras' armor bore the emblem of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Though a Templar, his armor's color scheme was that of the Knights Hospitalier.
- Even if Altaïr assassinates Haras with his Hidden Blade, he is shown sheathing his sword as the scene cuts into the Memory Corridor. In the novel, Altaïr kills Haras with a sword.
- It is unknown if the master mentioned by Haras is Grand Master Gerard de Ridefort or Basilisk, since the former died in October 1189, and it is not specified what month in 1189 the Assault on Masyaf occurs.
- Haras' character design was reused for Horacio de Heredia, an Assassin and former Knight Hospitalier featured in Assassin's Creed: Rebellion.
