This article is about the King of England from 1042 to 1066. For other uses, see Edward (disambiguation).
Edward the Confessor (Old English: Ēadƿeard Andettere; Latin: Edwardus Confessor; c. 1003 – 1066) was among the last Anglo-Saxon Kings of England who reigned from 1042 to 1066.[1]
Biography
In 1014, Edward fled with his father Æthelred II due to his usurpation by the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard. After Sweyn's succeeding son Cnut died, the House of Wessex resumed when Edward returned to England in 1042 after more than 30 years of exile and reigned there for the remainder of his life.[2]
In 1065, he rebuilt the Westminster Abbey, previously a Saxon church, with Romanesque architecture.[3] Within the abbey, he built the church of St. Margaret, which became one of the oldest churches in England.[4]
