Cilicia is a geographical region in southern Anatolia and northwestern Levant, extending inland from the northeastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

With the collapse of the Seleucid Empire in the late 2nd century BCE, a power vaccuum led the western Cilicia to turn into a pirate stronghold. With their inhabitants already known for military prowess and illegal activities, Cilicia soon became one of the most successful group of pirates in the region, remaining at large for several decades despite efforts from external authorities, such as Marcus Antonius Creticus who failed in his attempt around 100 BCE.[2]

In 47 BCE, Gaius Julius Caesar, preparing for a confrotation against Ptolemy XIII and his forces, sent for help from many Roman outposts, including Cilicia.[3]
