They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me Perfume trader.

This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, title, or alias.

A perfume trader (died 860s) who worked in Baghdad in the 860s conspired with his triplet brothers Alnilam and Alnitak to terrorize local merchants with the help of bandits and the Turkic military.

Biography

In the 860s, the perfume trader and his brothers concocted a plan by commissioning bandits to attack their fellow local merchants and to steal their wares.[1] In response, the merchant guild dispatched a delegate to enlist the help of the Hidden Ones in tracking down the traitor. The plan involved the use of marked coins to track the traitor's movements.[2] These coins led the Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq to investigate the perfume trader's involvement at his quarters at the Oil Maker's District. After evidence was found,[3] the perfume trader became a target for assassination assigned by the trade delegate.[4]

Wary for his life, the perfume trader guarded himself with Turkic soldiers at the Soap Boiler's District. However, his security detail was fruitless as Basim found and assassinated him secretly.[4] His death instigated his brothers to counteract by having the delegate abducted by bandits for the murder of their brother.[5]
