Diokles (died 420s BCE) was a Greek guard captain active in the city of Kydonia, Messara, during the 5th century BCE.
Biography
During his time stationed in Kydonia, Diokles and his men took a turn for the worse and became little more than bandits, inflaming the already tense relationship between Kydonia's military and the local merchants. One of the merchants in the area eventually took note of this, and asked the visiting Spartan misthios Kassandra to assist with the matter.[1]
As Kassandra engaged Diokles' men, the captain learned of the merchant's involvement and killed him, stealing the gems the merchant had promised Kassandra. Diokles also left a note for Kassandra, directing her to his location. There, the captain waited to ambush the misthios with his remaining men, confident about his victory, only to end up killed by Kassandra, who retrieved the stolen gems and Diokles' personal helmet.[1]
