Lake Ladoga is a lake in northwestern Russia, near Saint Petersburg.

By 879, the Varangian chieftain of the Rus', Rurik, controlled the port at Ladoga.[1] Azar, a merchant responsible for maintaining the trading routes between the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland and the 'Rus, kept up with their constant requests for ale and mead.[2]
