The Battle of Fort Necessity was one of the opening battles of the Seven Years' War.

History

In 1754, British colonial authorities[1] sent Lieutenant Colonel George Washington and a group of Virginian militia to the head of the Ohio River valley, a contested territory between British and French colonists. Washington and his troops attacked a French patrol at Jumonville Glen,[2] without provocation.[3]

Washington expected a return attack and had his troops build a palisade wall surrounding their supplies—a "Fort of Necessity". Supplies ran low, and the militia as well as their British Regular reinforcements were quickly overwhelmed. On 4 July, Washington surrendered to the French and was allowed to retreat,[2] but signed a document saying their commander had been "assassinated".[3]
