- "Father, do you not see? I control all of this. If I want to live, I live. If I want to take, I take. If I want you to die, you die!"
- ―Cesare Borgia to his father, 1503.[src]
Cesare Borgia (1475 or 1476 - 1507) was the son of Rodrigo Borgia and a nemesis of the Assassin Ezio Auditore. Like his father, he was a member of the Templar Order. Eventually, he became Captain General of the Papal armies, though he secretly plotted against his father to take over Rome, and all of Italy afterwards.
Even before his father's death, he claimed the rank of Grand Master of the Templar Order, usurping the title completely when his father eventually died. Although he appeared to be loyal to the Templars, he only desired control of the powers of the the Apple. (read more...)

- "I have lived my life as best I could, not knowing its purpose, but drawn forward like a moth to a distant moon; and here at last, I discover a strange truth. That I am only a conduit, for a message that eludes my understanding."
- ―Ezio Auditore da Firenze on his role as "the Prophet."[src]
Ezio Auditore da Firenze (1459 – 1524) was a Florentine nobleman during the Renaissance, and, unbeknownst to most historians and philosophers, the Mentor of the Italian branch of the Assassin Order, a title which he held from 1503 to 1512. He was also an ancestor to Desmond Miles and Clay Kaczmarek.
A member of the House of Auditore, Ezio remained unaware of his Assassin heritage until the age of 17, when he witnessed the hanging of his father and two brothers, Federico and Petruccio. Forced to flee his birthplace with his remaining family members - his mother and sister - Ezio took refuge in the Tuscan town of Monteriggioni, at the Villa Auditore.
After learning of his heritage from his uncle, Mario Auditore, Ezio began his Assassin training and set about on his quest for vengeance against the Templar Order, and their Grand Master, Rodrigo Borgia, who had ordered the execution of his kin. (read more...)

- "In a few short months my life changed forever. I know my easiest days are behind me, but I don't want them back- not now. My name is Desmond Miles, and I am an assassin. I am an assassin."
- ―Desmond reflecting on the past in the Black Room.[src]
Desmond Miles (born 13 March 1987) was a traveling hermit, and a descendant to various lines of ancestors who had sworn their allegiance to the Assassin Order, which included individuals such as Aquilus, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
In September 2012, he was kidnapped and incarcerated at Abstergo Industries, a Templar organization, and forced into a machine called the Animus to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, in order to acquire a map detailing all "Pieces of Eden" spread across the Earth.
Eventually escaping with the aid of Lucy Stillman, Desmond once again used an Animus to explore the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, so as to learn his skills and the ways of the Assassins through the bleeding effect. (read more...)

Mario Auditore (1434 - 1500) was an Italian condottiero and the ruler of Monteriggioni from 1454 to 1500. He was also the leader of the Italian Assassins until his death.
During his life, Mario worked with his brother, also an Assassin, to gather the Codex pages, as well as fortifying and defending Monterrigioni to prevent invasions. Under his rule, Monteriggioni became a flourishing community again.
He was also responsible for the training of his nephew, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, into a fully-trained Assassin. After the training, he continued to provide guidance and advise, up to his death during the fall of Monteriggioni in 1500. (read more...)

Assassin's Creed is a sandbox style action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game was released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in November 2007 and for PC in April 2008.
The game centers around the use of a machine dubbed "the Animus", which allows its user to view the genetic memories of his or her ancestors, specifically a bartender named Desmond Miles. As Desmond relives the memories of one of his ancestors, the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad who lived in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade, details of a battle between two ancient sects, the Knights Templar and the Assassins, emerge as both scour for an artifact known only as a "Piece of Eden".
The game received primarily positive reviews, for both its story and its gameplay, and received several awards at the 2006 E3. In November 2009, Assassin's Creed II was released as a sequel. (read more...)

- ―Caterina to Ezio Auditore, 1500[src]
Caterina Sforza (1463 – 1509) was the Countess of Forlì and Imola, and the daughter of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan. She was engaged to Pope Sixtus IV's nephew, Girolamo Riario, at only 10 years of age, and consummated the marriage at 14.
As countess of Forlì, she became a strong ally of the Assassin Order, meeting the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze after her husband Girolamo had her trapped on a small island in Romagna. Eight years later, Caterina had her husband killed by the Orsi brothers after finding out that he was working for the Templars and for being a lousy husband.
Offering to keep the ancient artifact, the "Apple of Eden", safe in Forlì, Caterina and the Assassins Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli found the city taken by the Orsi brothers, who were hired by the Templars. Re-taking the city, Ezio saved Caterina's children from the Orsi and killed the two brothers, though the Apple was eventually taken from him. (read more...)

With the Assassin Order, Niccolò primarily worked with his ally Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and helped him with driving the Orsi brothers from Forlì and with removing the monk Girolamo Savonarola from power in Florence to obtain the "Apple of Eden" - an ancient artifact - from him. (read more...)

Eventually meeting with Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an Assassin-in-training on a quest for vengeance, the pair worked together to thwart the Templars' plans to take over Venice. After a failed attempt to infiltrate the Palazzo della Seta by the thieves, Ezio eventually managed to do so with their help, resulting in the successful assassination of Emilio Barbarigo. Malik nurtured a jealousy of his rival Altaïr, which was fired into rage when Altaïr ignored the tenets of the Creed, and endangered his companions' lives during the events of Solomon's Temple. Malik retrieved the Templar treasure that Altaïr had failed to find, and delivered it to Al Mualim.
Altaïr made Malik his close second-in-command after becoming the Mentor. As such, Malik was eventually appointed as a temporary leader in Altaïr's absence.
Sometime after this, a hated rival of Altaïr's, Abbas Sofian, imprisoned Malik in Masyaf's dungeons for close to two years with false charges of murder, and had him beheaded when Altaïr returned from his quest across the Middle East. Malik's death occurred during 1228. (read more...)

The Templar Order, also known as the Order of the Knights Templar, were a monastic military order-turned-corporate giant, which was formed during the prehistoric era. The Templars sought to create a perfect world, although the means by which they aimed to do so - through force, control and the destruction of free will - directly contrasted the ideals of their sworn enemies, the Assassin Order.
Because of this difference in ideology, the Templars became involved in a covert war against the Assassins, spanning centuries, with their opposition's motivating belief being that mankind should always have the ability to choose; to have the freedom of liberty, even if it meant accepting that humanity would always be flawed in their ways.
