- "It was your responsibility to know, as much as mine, Agaté. I was a child when you brought me into the Brotherhood and made me an Assassin. You pretended to protect me, to root out the enemy!"
- ―Aveline to Agaté regarding his position as Mentor, 1777.[src]
Agaté (c. 1722 – 1777) was the Mentor of the Assassin Brotherhood in Louisiana, operating from his hideout in the Louisiana Bayou.
Enslaved from a young age, Agaté came into contact with revolutionary disruptor François Mackandal, who taught him the ways of the Assassins. Following the death of his Mentor in 1758, Agaté traveled to Louisiana, a marked man, and hid in the bayou.
Agaté subsequently established the local Assassin guild, recruiting Aveline de Grandpré and Gérald Blanc, whom he trained to be his agents in New Orleans. After the Templars' presence in the bayou notably increased in 1766, Agaté went further into hiding, constructing a hidout deep within the swamp. (read more...)

Madeleine de L'Isle (1732 – 1777) served as Master Templar in the Southern Colonies of America, operating under the alias of the "Company Man". Living in New Orleans, she was the second wife of the wealthy French merchant Philippe de Grandpré, though she was the first to be legally recognized.
After Madeleine discovered proof that a First Civilization artifact was located in Mexico, she devised a plan to acquire workers to excavate it. She subsequently entrusted the execution of said plan to her right-hand man, Rafael Joaquín de Ferrer.
Simultaneously, she noticed the potential of her stepdaughter, Aveline de Grandpré, and decided to groom her for membership in the Templar Order. Manipulating Aveline's biological mother Jeanne into leaving New Orleans, Madeleine then adopted the role of doting stepmother. When her stepdaughter later joined the Assassins, Madeleine managed to subtly procure valuable information on the Brotherhood, allowing her to become the head Templar of Louisiana. (read more...)

- "I stand with those who stand with me. I lure my prey through the guise of a lady. I escape unnoticed through the veil of a slave. And though I may conceal my identity, one thing is certain: commit injustice in this world, and I'll send you to the next. I am Aveline de Grandpré, I am an Assassin, and I fight for liberation."
- ―Aveline de Grandpré.[src]
Aveline de Grandpré (1747 – unknown) was an Assassin of French and African heritage, who lived in the area of New Orleans during the middle of the 18th century. She is an ancestor to "Subject 1".
Born to the wealthy French merchant Philippe de Grandpré and an African slave by the name of Jeanne, Aveline was raised in a comfortable and privileged environment. After her mother disappeared in 1757, Aveline was cared for and brought up by her stepmother, Madeleine de L'Isle, whom her father had married five years prior.
Shrewd by nature, Aveline noticed the contrasts present within the society she lived in and, at the age of twelve, resolved to act against this injustice. Following an attempt to rescue a man from enslavement, she met the Assassin Agaté, who was impressed by her dedication to pursuing freedom. He decided to take Aveline under his wing, training her to become an official member of the Brotherhood. (read more...)

- "There is a smuggler – a woman named Élise Lafleur... She knows every bog and tangle of the swamp."
- ―Agaté describing Élise to Aveline, 1766.[src]
Élise Lafleur was a smuggler who, together with her partner Roussillon, ran smuggling operations in the Louisiana Bayou during the 18th century. In 1766, her knowledge of the area led her to be contacted by the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, who eventually became a close ally of hers.
Due to the strategically valuable territory she occupied, Élise was often faced with competition from other groups that sought to take over the bayou, hoping to use it to finance their own projects. Unafraid of confrontation as she was, Élise would frequently work together with Aveline to oust these intruders. In return, Élise occasionally aided the Assassin in her own endeavors.
In 2012, her genetic memories were used as an Animi Avatar by the entertainment branch of the Templar company Abstergo Industries, as part of their geosimulation workspace on the portable version of the Animus console, under the title of the Thief. (read more...)

- "Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine."
- ―The Creed of the Levantine Assassins.[src]
The Levantine Assassins, also known as Hashashin, were the Brotherhood of Assassins located along the Levant, and the leading branch of the Order during the High Middle Ages.
Primarily fighting their sworn enemies, the Knights Templar, during the Crusades, the Levantine Assassins were a more public organization than the other Assassin branches. Centering themselves in their fortress in the village of Masyaf, the Assassins quite often found their headquarters attacked by both Crusaders and Saracens alike.
Under the leadership of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, the Assassin Order was rebuilt, with new techniques created and rules and restrictions undone. Using knowledge gained from an "Apple of Eden" to do so, the Levantine Assassins were eventually spread to different locations around the globe – an effort to make the Assassin Order a more global organization – with the Levantine Assassins becoming the forebearer to many other Assassin branches in the process. - "What is a man but the sum of his memories? We are the stories we live! The tales we tell ourselves!"
- ―Clay Kaczmarek.[src]
Clay Kaczmarek (1982 – 2012), also known as Subject 16 of the Animus Project, was a member of the Assassin Order during the early 21st century. Born into a family of engineers, Clay faced psychological problems due to developmental disorders and his father's neglectful attitude. Because of this, Clay ran into the Assassins while looking for acceptance.
As a member of the Assassin Brotherhood, Clay's most important mission was to infiltrate Abstergo Industries as a subject of the Animus Project, in order to obtain more information on the Animus. Labeled Subject 16, Clay was forced to relive the memories of his ancestors via his genetic memory.
When Clay found out that his teammate, Lucy Stillman – who infiltrated Abstergo years before and was tasked with getting Clay out of Abstergo safely – had abandoned their cause to join their enemies, the Templars, Clay had to spend days and hours of sessions inside the Animus.
Since it left his mind incapable of separating his own personality from those of his ancestors', Clay became mentally unstable to the point that he ultimately committed suicide. (read more...)

- "They call me many things: Murderer. Tagliagole (Cutthroat). Thief. But you may call me La Volpe."
- ―La Volpe introducing himself, 1478.[src]
Gilberto, known mainly as La Volpe (English:The Fox), was the leader of the Florentine and Roman thieves, and a member of the Assassin Order. Very little information was known about La Volpe, and any that was seemed mythical.
In 1478, La Volpe assisted Ezio Auditore da Firenze in locating an important Templar meeting, which resulted in Ezio preventing the Pazzi Conspiracy from succeeding. Ten years later, La Volpe was present in Venice, where the Assassins reclaimed an Apple of Eden from Rodrigo Borgia.
After the fall of Monteriggioni, La Volpe moved to Rome, where he fought the Borgia influence in the city. However, he refused to work with the Assassins because of his suspicions towards Niccolò Machiavelli. Later, after Ezio had helped him by saving some of his thieves, as well as providing him with evidence of the real traitor, La Volpe agreed to assist the Assassins again. (read more...)

Bartolomeo had been ensnared in a losing battle with the French for a few years, and it had grown worse with the addition of Borgia soldiers. However, the Assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, aided Bartolomeo in his fight by assassinating Battista Borgia, causing the Borgia troops to withdraw from the battle.
Following the battle, the Assassins were able to focus their attention to the Borgia, having driven the French soldiers from Rome. This led the Assassins to procure a key to the Castel Sant'Angelo, enabling them with full access of the Castello. (read more...)

The riot at the Harbor of Theodosius was an event that occurred during the Ottoman Empire in the year 1511, in which a large group of vexed citizens at Constantinople's Harbor of Theodosius rioted against the Janissaries because of their corrupt behavior.
However, the turmoil was catalyzed by the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who arrived at the harbor and incited the citizens by bribing local heralds, who were then used to stimulate the conflict.
After the incident at the harbor, Ezio met with Ottoman Prince Suleiman I, who gave him the orders to assassinate Tarik Barleti, the Janissary Captain. - "Sometimes I feel so disconnected from everything out there. Nearly a decade of my life gone, searching for those Pieces of Eden."
- ―Lucy to Desmond, 2012.[src]
Lucy Stillman (1988 – 2012) was a member of the Assassin Order and a genetic memory researcher for Abstergo Industries' Animus Project. During her infiltration of Abstergo, she reported information on the company's recent activities to the Assassins. However, Lucy's lengthy separation from the Assassin Order and her distrust for William Miles led to her secret defection to the Templar cause prior to 2011.
When Desmond Miles was brought into Abstergo for testing, Warren Vidic instructed Lucy to earn Desmond's trust, so that the Templars could ultimately find the Piece of Eden located within his memories, and use it for their Eye-Abstergo satellite.
As Desmond's condition began to worsen however, Warren and Lucy turned to more drastic measures, and formulated Project Siren. Lucy was ordered to take Desmond somewhere he would feel safe, and the two Templars orchestrated Desmond's and her escape from Abstergo. Lucy carried out her orders, and relocated Desmond to a hideout to join his fellow Assassins Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. (read more...)

- "I realize now that it will take time, that the road ahead is long and shrouded in darkness. It is a road that will not always take me where I wish to go – and I doubt I will live to see it end. But I will travel down it nonetheless."

Ratonhnhaké:ton (1756 – unknown), often known by the adopted name of Connor, was a Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin during the period of the American Revolutionary War, and is an ancestor of Desmond Miles, through the paternal line.

Growing up concerned by the outside world's impact on his people, Ratonhnhaké:ton joined the Assassin Order to prevent the Templars from returning. Finding the Templars had all but destroyed the Colonial Assassins, Ratonhnhaké:ton convinced Achilles Davenport to train him. Using Connor as an adopted pseudonym, he revitalized the Order by recruiting craftsmen to renovate the Davenport Homestead and the Assassin ship, the Aquila. Robert Faulkner subsequently trained him to captain the ship, while Ratonhnhaké:ton inducted six more Assassins into the Order. (read more...)

- Ezio: "You are... gods."
- Minerva: "No. Not gods. We simply came... before."
- —Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Minerva, on the nature of the First Civilization, 1499.[src]
The First Civilization, also known to some as Those Who Came Before, or the Precursors, was an ancient and advanced species of humanoid beings that were amongst the first to call Earth their home. They were responsible for the creation of the Pieces of Eden, as well as the human race itself, whom they used as a domestic workforce. With early humans unable to comprehend the First Civilization for what they truly were, they were looked upon as gods.
Eventually, war broke out between the First Civilization and their then unoppressed human slaves; this, coupled with the onset of what would be referred to as the "Toba catastrophe", would see the First Civilization slip into extinction. Despite this, their legacy would live on for thousands of years in various myths and legends. (read more...)

Against her brother's desire for Claudia and her mother Maria to go to their hometown of Florence, Claudia and Maria followed Ezio to Rome, where Claudia became the Madame of the Rosa in Fiore, the city's most popular brothel.
Eventually, after proving herself to be a worthy fighter to her brother, Ezio inducted Claudia into the Order of Assassins. Desmond Miles (born 13 March 1987) was a traveling hermit, and a descendant to various lines of ancestors who had sworn their allegiance to the Assassin Order, which included individuals such as Aquilus, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
In September 2012, he was kidnapped and incarcerated at Abstergo Industries, a Templar organization, and forced into a machine called the Animus to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, in order to acquire a map detailing all "Pieces of Eden" spread across the Earth.
Eventually escaping with the aid of Lucy Stillman, Desmond once again used an Animus to explore the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, so as to learn his skills and the ways of the Assassins through the bleeding effect. (read more...)

The game received primarily positive reviews, for both its story and its gameplay, and received several awards at the 2006 E3. In November 2009, Assassin's Creed II was released as a sequel. (read more...)

- ―Malik forgiving Altaïr for the event in Solomon's Temple.[src]
Malik Al-Sayf (1165 – 1228) was the head of the Assassin bureau in Jerusalem around 1191, and later the right-hand man of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins.
Raised as an Assassin, Malik learned the fighting arts that struck fear into the hearts of their enemies. He was an excellent swordsman and a devoted acolyte to the Creed, as well as a caring and mature figure for his brother, Kadar.

Despite this, Malik retrieved the Templar treasure that Altaïr had failed to find, and delivered it to Al Mualim.
After Altaïr subsequently hunted and executed nine influential Templars to restore his rank of Master Assassin and assassinate Al Mualim for his corruption, he made Malik his close second-in-command after his change of attitude and appointment as the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins. As such, Malik was eventually deemed a temporary leader in the case of Altaïr's absence. (read more...)

- "Even when your kind appears to triumph ... Still we rise again. And do you know why? It is because the Order is born of a realization. We require no creed. No indoctrination by desperate old men. All we need is that the world be as it is. And THIS is why the Templars will never be destroyed."
- ―Haytham Kenway[src]

The Templar Order, also known as the Order of the Knights Templar, were a monastic military order-turned-corporate giant, which was formed during the prehistoric era. The Templars sought to create a perfect world, although the means by which they aimed to do so - through force, control and the destruction of free will - directly contrasted the ideals of their sworn enemies, the Assassin Order.
Because of this difference in ideology, the Templars became involved in a covert war against the Assassins, spanning centuries, with their opposition's motivating belief being that mankind should always have the ability to choose; to have the freedom of liberty, even if it meant accepting that humanity would always be flawed in their ways.
