==Description== | |||
The Blood Bomb contained lambs' blood. It used the force of the blast to disperse this blood over a space determined by the kind of powder used. Anybody caught in the blast was covered and thought that he or she was badly injured, due to the loud sounds and red stains on their clothes. This bomb could be used to stop pursuers and stun combatants, leaving them open for attack or for an escape. Alternatively, it could be used to create a distraction, as exploding the bomb on the ground created a pool of blood, which any guard would investigate. | |||

Smoke screen bombs were tactical explosives that were used by the Assassins during the Renaissance, both in Italy and Constantinople. In Italy, they were purchasable from blacksmiths, whereas in Constantinople, smoke screen bombs were required to be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with the phosphorus effect. Accompanying this, they could also be obtained by looting the corpses of Varangian guards. | |||
==Description== | |||
Smoke screen bombs used in Constantinople released a thick, dark cloud of smoke, obscuring the vision of those trapped in its radius. Its effect was so great that those inside the smoke screen had to rely completely on their hearing whilst the smoke covered them. It also blinded the vision of Ezio as well, forcing him to use Eagle Sense in order to "see" inside the cloud of smoke. | |||
It was a highly effective bomb, both at breaking pursuit and disabling any guards, without risking civilian casualties. It did not, however, last for very long, allowing the guards outside its radius (while still unable to pass through) to be capable of attacking. | |||

From there on, smoke bombs were able to be purchased from blacksmiths. | |||
In Rome, during the 16th century, smoke bombs were also able to be purchased from blacksmiths for 350ƒ each, however, only after the smoke bomb pouch was purchased from a tailor for 9500ƒ. This allowed Ezio to carry a total of three smoke bombs at a time. | |||

In Constantinople, smoke screen bombs were crafted instead, using an ingredient called phosphorus. Upon speaking to Piri Reis about the bomb, he explained to Ezio on how to use the new explosive. - "We have many different kinds of bombs here. Some are used tactically to stop chasing guards or manipulate a crowd. Others are used to create diversions, a good way to handle guards before they attack."
- ―Yusuf Tazim, introducing Ezio to bombs in Constantinople.[src]

Bombs were explosive weapons used by Assassins from as early as the Middle Ages. They could be used for a variety of tactics, including escape, assault and distraction.
Smoke bombs
Smoke bombs were devices that were used more for distraction, rather than offensive purposes. They could be thrown from a distance or dropped on the spot. Using a powder technology from the Far East, the bomb released a thick, grayish smoke screen for a brief time when thrown.[1]
With a smoke bomb device, an Assassin was able to halt any enemy or target, allowing for an easy assassination or escape. This also gave them the capability to strike specific targets, or take down larger groups of enemies without being seen or encountering resistance.[1]
History
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad had access to smoke bombs during his quest for the Chalice. He could carry up to five of them at a time, though evidently stopped using them after the events at Solomon's Temple.[2]
Smoke bombs were the only type of bombs that were commonly available to Ezio Auditore up until the 16th century. However, upon traveling to Constantinople during his quest to open Altaïr's library, he gained access to a far more extensive variety of bombs.
During the Renaissance, smoke bombs were disposable, and had to be purchased for 350 florins each. Ezio could carry a maximum of three at once, which he stored in a non-upgradeable pouch.[1]
Ezio also made use of smoke bombs in the city of Rome, though the actual cloud itself was visually a lot smaller than during the previous century. Smoke bombs were also used by Assassin recruits to stun guards once they reached the rank of Veterano (Veteran).[3][4]
Both the Templars and Assassins were seen using smoke bombs during the American Revoultionary War.[5]
Hand-held bombs
- "Quite little bombs, but effective enough to, say, wreck ships or disperse a camp."
- ―Leonardo da Vinci.[src]
Hand-held bombs were small explosive devices designed and manufactured by Ezio's close friend, Leonardo da Vinci. Consisting of a small, steel ball filled with sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate, they also possessed a small fuse which required lighting before the device could be detonated.[6]
History
These bombs were first used against Cesare Borgia's diehards, who had amassed a sizable military force in the city of Valencia.[6]
During the attack on Valencia, Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli, each equipped with ten hand-held bombs, brought chaos to Cesare's military forces. They destroyed twelve Borgia ships, and an entire military encampment.[6]
As a young privateer and then naval sailor, Piri Reis also used a variety of bombs, having been introduced to them through his uncle Kemal.[7]
Crafting
- "Crafting explosives is a new hobby, one we borrowed from the Chinese and have taken to with great passion."
- ―Yusuf Tazim, speaking of the Turkish Assassins' bomb-crafting.[src]
Upon traveling to Constantinople, Ezio learned from his fellow Assassin Yusuf Tazim how to create a wide range of bombs, with up to 120 variations. In general, they could be divided into three categories: lethal, tactical and diversion.[7]
In order to craft bombs expeditiously whenever they acquired the needed ingredients, Assassins set up bomb-crafting stations throughout Constantinople and Cappadocia. Ezio could also quickly craft additional bombs of the same type he was currently carrying, provided he had the required ingredients, but if he ran out of those ingredients or wished to make a different type of bomb, he would have to return to a bomb-crafting station.
The bombs could be customized based on their different components: casing, gunpowder layer, and effect layer. The casing affected the bomb's structure, while the gunpowder layer defined the properties of the explosion itself, along with the effect layer providing a further result on detonation, such as the scattering of caltrops being one example.[7] Casing determined how the bomb was deployed, gunpowder type determined the strength of the explosion, and effects ingredients determined the effect that the bomb had on those within the blast radius.
Throughout his time in the city, Ezio was able to collect different ingredients for each of these bombs, and could craft up to a maximum of five bombs per pouch. He had three bomb pouches for lethal, tactical, and diversion. He could also buy bombs from black market dealers, or ingredients from Piri Reis's shop in the Grand Bazaar, doctors, and blacksmiths. He also received ingredients from other cities that were liberated from the Templars.
| Type | Effect |
|---|---|
| Caltrop Bombs | Caltrop bombs impeded enemy movement by dispersing small, pointed metal spikes across the ground, rendering its victims vulnerable during combat. They could also be used for halting or slowing enemies during a chase. |
| Datura Bombs | A lethal explosive designed to slowly poison anyone who breathed in its fumes, Datura bombs instilled a sense of delirium in its victims, due to the use of the petals from the datura plant. |
| Cherry Bombs | Cherry bombs could lure guards towards a certain area through the use of a loud, high-pitched noise, produced from using sulfur. |
| Smoke Decoy Bombs | Similar to Cherry bombs, these bombs lured guards to one point by creating the illusion of a fire, but only those who could see its activation. Smoke Decoys required the used of salt of Petra to be created. |
| Gold Bombs | Filled with pyrite coins, these bombs were used to create distractions by attracting a crowd of civilians who mistook the coins for gold. This would distract guards and occasionally start a brawl when the guards attempted to clear the area. |
| Splinter Bombs | Used to kill or injure targets upon impact, the Splinter Bomb could dispense with groups of enemies caught in its deadly radius with shrapnel, as well as blow away the cover on wells located around Constantinople. |
| Thunder Bombs | These bombs were a non-lethal method, filled with coal dust, and used to cripple targets with the force of the explosion only, as well as allowing those wielding them to break apart covers on wells. |
| Blood Bombs | Once detonated, this bomb released out a splatter of lamb's blood, making nearby individuals believe it to be their own, thereby scaring them away. |
| Smoke Screen Bomb | A tactical smoke bomb which, when exploded, created a dense, black smoke from phosphorus to daze nearby guards and civilians and block their sight. |
| Stink Bombs | When detonated, Stink Bombs released a foul odor, derived from skunk oil, that repelled any and all of those who came too close. |
Trivia
Assassin's Creed II
- The smoke bomb pouch is labelled as "small", despite not having any upgrades available for it, where other pouches labelled the same way had medium and larger variants.
- In the memory "Cheaters Never Prosper," the three guards and Dante Moro are immune to smoke bombs.
- While looting Brutes, there is a high chance of obtaining smoke bombs.
- Smoke bombs are helpful for earning the achievements "No Hitter", "Messer Sandman," and "Sweeper."
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

- The smoke bomb appears as a multiplayer ability.
- There seems to be a small spark of light when a smoke bomb is deployed, unlike in Assassin's Creed II, where there is no spark.
- One BAM (Brotherhood Assist Move) has the Assassins throw numerous smoke bombs around Ezio before descending to aid him.
- The player may lock onto a far-off NPC, before pressing the "throw bomb" button to throw the smoke bomb from a distance.
- Papal guards are immune to the effects of smoke bombs if not taken by surprise, i.e. in combat.
- Cesare Borgia and pickpockets are completely immune to Smoke Bombs.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations

- The achievement "Pyromaniac" can be earned when a player completes all of the Bomb missions for Piri Reis.
- Ezio can add an extra space for bombs in each of his pouches by completing Piri Reis' bomb challenges. However, a fifth bomb in each pouch can only be acquired if the player pre-ordered the Signature Edition or Animus Edition of the game, or has purchased The Lost Archive DLC.
- By highlighting a bomb in the Weapon selection menu, Ezio can recreate a bomb, provided he has the ingredients to construct it.
- This ability can be performed for the first time after Ezio is given a Cherry bomb by Yusuf during the On The Attack memory, although he had not learned how to craft bombs at that point.
- Rooftop guards in Assassin's Creed: Revelations possess the ability to use Thunder bombs.
- Both Smoke bombs and Tripwire bombs exist as Multiplayer abilities in Revelations.
- In all the cinematics, bombs given to Ezio are always displayed as having terracotta shell whether it is a tripwire bomb, a fuse bomb or a sticky bomb (with the exception of the Piri Reis tutorial on tripwire bombs.)
Others

- In Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, smoke bombs require the reagents of gunpowder and sugar to be crafted.

Caltrop bombs were bombs that were used by the Ottoman Assassins, which impeded enemy movement via the dispersal of small spikes across the ground, rendering their victims vulnerable during a fight. They could be crafted using any bomb shell or gunpowder type, combined with the caltrops ingredient.[1]
Description
Caltrops were small metal objects with three or more spikes, which were arranged in such a way that at least one of the spikes would always face upwards when they landed on the ground. As such, the bombs used the force of the explosion to disperse these spikes across the blast radius, and anyone who stepped onto them was incapacitated due to the barbed spikes digging into their feet.

- The achievement Mouse Trap could be earned by using a Caltrop bomb to halt a total of 5 guards, before killing them with a scaffold by destroying it with the Hookblade.
- In a Den Defense, Assassins which used Caltrop bombs were one of the units that Ezio could deploy. When they caught a Templar with their bombs, it only did a small amount of damage, but it slowed their targets' movement speed significantly, allowing other units to make quick work of them.
- Despite this, the Templars' heavy siege weapon was immune to these bombs.

It was highly effective in direct confrontations, as the detonation of even one such bomb could kill anyone within its radius, including even the heavily armored Almogavars and Janissaries. However, due to its indiscriminate nature, civilian casualties were a very real possibility when they were present.
It was one of two types of bombs that could open up sealed wells, the other being the Thunder Bombs.

The Thunder bomb crippled or injured foes with an intense explosive force. It could be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with the coal dust effect. It was also wielded by Byzantine and Ottoman bombmen.
Description
The Thunder Bomb contained Coal Dust which increased the force of the blast. The bomb crippled any weak or unarmored victims, but only momentarily stunned stronger and heavily armored enemies.
It was highly useful for stunning enemies, opening them up for a follow-up attack. However, it was less effective for direct killing. This did reduce the chance of civilian casualties when they were present.
It was one of two types of bombs that could open up sealed wells, the other being the Splinter Bombs.

The Blood Bomb scattered a thick spray of blood over its victims, stunning them briefly with the fear that they had just been badly injured. This bomb could be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with the lamb's blood ingredient at bomb-crafting stations.
Description
The Blood Bomb contained lambs' blood. It used the force of the blast to disperse this blood over a space determined by the kind of powder used. Anybody caught in the blast was covered and thought that he or she was badly injured, due to the loud sounds and red stains on their clothes. This bomb could be used to stop pursuers and stun combatants, leaving them open for attack or for an escape. Alternatively, it could be used to create a distraction, as exploding the bomb on the ground created a pool of blood, which any guard would investigate.

- Piri: "Ah! Turkish smoke bombs. Are you curious to try a few?"
- Ezio: "Should I? I have used smoke bombs before, with varying results."
- Piri: "But not like ours. We have a special recipe for deep, dark clouds. Throw one of these and your eyes are useless. You must rely on your hearing, and... any other senses you may have cultivated."
- —Piri Reis, describing a smoke screen bomb to Ezio.[src]
Smoke screen bombs were tactical explosives that were used by the Assassins during the Renaissance, both in Italy and Constantinople. In Italy, they were purchasable from blacksmiths, whereas in Constantinople, smoke screen bombs were required to be crafted using any shell or gunpowder type combined with the phosphorus effect. Accompanying this, they could also be obtained by looting the corpses of Varangian guards.
Description
Smoke screen bombs used in Constantinople released a thick, dark cloud of smoke, obscuring the vision of those trapped in its radius. Its effect was so great that those inside the smoke screen had to rely completely on their hearing whilst the smoke covered them. It also blinded the vision of Ezio as well, forcing him to use Eagle Sense in order to "see" inside the cloud of smoke.
It was a highly effective bomb, both at breaking pursuit and disabling any guards, without risking civilian casualties. It did not, however, last for very long, allowing the guards outside its radius (while still unable to pass through) to be capable of attacking.[1]
After advancing enough through the ranks of the Assassin Order, certain Assassin apprentices were also able to equip themselves with the bombs.[2][1]
History
In 1478, Ezio travelled to San Gimignano to assassinate the remaining Pazzi conspirators, and in particular, Stefano da Bagnone. Upon reaching the abbey where he was located, one of Mario Auditore's mercenaries provided Ezio with a smoke bomb to use upon escape. From there on, smoke bombs were able to be purchased from blacksmiths.[3]
In Rome, during the 16th century, smoke bombs were also able to be purchased from blacksmiths for 350ƒ each, however, only after the smoke bomb pouch was purchased from a tailor for 9500ƒ. This allowed Ezio to carry a total of three smoke bombs at a time.[2]

In Constantinople, smoke screen bombs were crafted instead, using an ingredient called phosphorus. Upon speaking to Piri Reis about the bomb, he explained to Ezio on how to use the new explosive. To allow him to try the bomb for himself, Piri sent Ezio on a mission in which the Assassin used the smoke screen bomb to infiltrate a church courtyard and steal the bomb ingredients stored there.[1]
Trivia

- The achievement "I can see you" was achieved by killing 5 guards, while they were caught in the effects of the smoke screen bomb.
- During Abstergo Industries' Animi Training Program – and by extension, the Animus games console by Abstergo Entertainment – smoke screen bombs were used by Abstergo's recruits and the game's audience to stun enemies and prevent attacks.
