The Yangon River flowing through Yangon

The Yangon River (Burmese: လှိုင်မြစ်), also known as the Rangoon River or Hlaing River, is a river formed from the confluence of the Bago and Myitmaka Rivers in southern Myanmar. It is a marine estuary that runs from the city of Yangon to the Gulf of Martaban of the Andaman Sea.[1]

History

In 1725, the members of the Zhang Wei Union sailed along the Yangon River following Edward Kenway and Shimazu Saito's successful retrieval of a Piece of Eden from the Shwedagon Pagoda. While attempting to return to their flagship Fenghuang, however, they were betrayed by John Young, who stole the artifact[2] and revealed himself as a Templar double agent. John then escaped when the group's ship and the Fenghuang came under attack by an East India Company fleet under the command of the Templar Grand Master Alan Jacob.[3]

After Nagamasa and his mercenaries saved the Fenghuang from the attacking ships, the East India Company fleet retreated and set sail towards the Strait of Malacca. Meanwhile, Nagamasa picked up Edward, Saito, and Yun Pyeong-Gyu, who had fallen into the water following their ship's destruction, and the group returned to the Fenghuang. Once aboard, Edward gave the order to chase the enemy fleet to recover the stolen Piece of Eden.[4]
