Wishtman's Wood

Wishtman's Wood was a patch of forest in southern Hamtunscire, England. It is the remnant of an oak forest that dates back almost 9,000 years, with its name probably deriving from the local word "wisht" meaning "eerie" or "haunted".[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 878, the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir accompanied her allies Soma and Guthrum through the forest's road after burning down Werham. While traveling, they came across King Alfred's Saxon soldiers and killed them. At the ruins within the forest, Eivor and Guthrum discussed their next plans on their fight against Alfred at Chippenham. Thus, Eivor asked Soma to guide her other allies from the River Thames while she and Guthrum rode to Hamtun Blockade to free some of his men. Before leaving, Eivor investigated the ruins, ventured down a well, and found a Roman artifact.[2]
