Totonacapan was a powerful and independent region along the Gulf of Mexico long before the rise of the Aztecs, controlled by the Totonac people.[1] Totonacapan was one of the first indigenous kingdoms to side with the invading Hernán Cortés against the Aztecs. An act which drew the ire of many neighboring peoples.[2]
