The Stable of Augeias in the 5th century BCE

The Stable of Augeias was a stable which had allegedly belonged to Augeias, King of Elis, in Greek mythology.

History

Myth

According to the Greek mythology, the fifth task given by King Eurystheas of Mycenae to the hero Herakles was to cleanse out the stables of Augeas. The thing was that the cattle within were immortal, and numbered at over 1,000. In addition to that, the stables hadn't been cleaned for thirty years.[1] Herakles asked to be paid if he managed to do it in one day, and King Augeias agreed.[1]

Despite expectations, Herakles succeeded in this task; he diverted the paths of the rivers Alpheus in Peloponnese and Pineios in Thessaly so that they ran through the stables, removing the filth within.[1]

5th century BCE

By the time of the Peloponnesian War in the 5th century BCE, the stable was an abandoned site outside Elis City within the Kingdom of Pelops. When the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the place, she found it had become a den of boars.[2]
