Sparth

The sparth is an Irish polearm that features a broad, single-edged blade bound to a long shaft.

Description[edit | edit source]

Similar to the Scottish Lochaber axe in design, the sparth is a poleaxe of Irish origin which consists of a broad single-edged blade that is bound to the end of a pole rather than mounted on top of it. This axe head is exceedingly long, straight on its backside, and convex on its keen edge. A thin spike protrudes from the top of this blade.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

During the French Revolution, the sparth was among the types of weapons available for purchase in Paris and was priced at 5,000.[1]
