Aristaios (died c. 427 BCE) was a Boeotian champion and a strategos in the Athenian army during the Peloponnesian War.
History
Aristaios rose to be considered one of the Champions of Boeotia due to his skills as a soldier and a tactician. His generation of the champions also included Deianeira, who became a central figure of the group. She was a member of the Heroes of the Cult branch of the Cult of Kosmos, and under her influence, the Champions changed.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War Aristaios was assigned to train troops at the Military Fort of Gla in Lake Kopais near the City of Orchomenos in Boeotia.[2]
When the Spartan army marched into Boeotia in order to weaken Kleon's position in Athens, the polemarch Stentor, received reports revealing Aristaios' location. Before he could use this information otherwise, his step-sister the misthios Kassandra came to the Spartan Military Camp by the order of King Archidamos. Wishing to be rid of her, Stentor tasked her to kill the Boeotian champions, including Aristaios, believing such a mission to be her death.[2]
Before Kassandra found Aristaios, however, her father Nikolaos reached him. The two men duelled on Kopais Perch near the fort, with Nikolaos eventually slaying Aristaios as Kassandra watched.[3]
Behind the scenes
Aristaios, a character in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, shares his name with a minor deified hero in the Greek mythology.
Aristaios carries a shield emblazoned with the image of a Pegasos, the emblem of Korinthia, possibly suggesting at his family's origins.
If Nikolaos is slain in The Wolf of Sparta, then Aristaios' fate is in the hands of the Eagle Bearer, meaning that Aristaios can be recruited as a lieutenant aboard the ship Adrestia.
