The Siege of Paris of 845 was the culmination of a Viking invasion of West Francia. The Viking forces were led by Ragnar Lothbrok.
Jarl Sten Stensson participated in the siege and fought under Ragnar, as did over five thousand other Vikings. The Seine was filled with their 120 ships and dyed red with their battles. The Franks paid the Vikings so much silver and gold that Sten remarked that if they'd given more, their ships would've sunk.[1]
Legacy
As they sailed towards England in 866, Sten Stensson told his sons Ulf and Björn about his experiences in Francia.[1]
Upon arriving in Francia in 885 to aid another siege of Paris, the jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan remembered that Ragnar had sacked the city for "a fortune in silver and sorrow".[2]
