The Shawnee are a people indigenous to North America, who mostly lived around the Ohio Valley.

History

During the French and Indian War, the Shawnee sided with the French Army, their traditional trading partners, in the hope it would stop the British Army encroaching on their hunting grounds in Pennsylvania and Virginia. They participated in the attack on the Braddock Expedition with the Abenaki and Lenape.

By 1758, some Shawnee negotiated peace with the British in the Treaty of Easton, but British violations of the treaty led to them joining another war - Pontiac's War - five years later.

During the American Revolutionary War, many Shawnee remained neutral, although some sided with the British because they still distrusted the colonists. After the war, like many indigenous peoples, the Shawnee were forced to leave their lands and migrate to Oklahoma.
