Arabia is a cultural region originating in the Arabian Peninsula whose emergence as a powerful state in the 7th century coincided with its founding of Islam by Muhammad. The theocratic regime established by his companions upon his death became known as the first caliphate, for its rulers bore the title of caliph as the spiritual and political successors of Muhammad. It rapidly conquered Persia, the Levant, and Egypt, creating a simultaneously Arabian and Islamic empire, before being overthrown by the Ummayad dynasty.[8]
The Umayyad Caliphate based their capital in Damascus,[8] where they constructed the grand mosque that came to bear their name.[9] Their Arab ethno-nationalist policies incited grievances among its diverse population,[2] culminating in a revolution in 750 that brought to power the Abbasid dynasty.[10] Because the Persians were a prominent force among the revolutionaries, the new caliphate fostered a renaissance in Persian culture even while retaining the originally Arab religion of Islam, resulting in the emergence of a culturally syncretic political realm.[2]
