Rurik (c. 830 – 879) was a Varangian chieftain of the Rus' who founded and built the city of Novgorod in modern-day Russia. He was also the founder of the dynasty that ruled the various monarchies of Russia until the 17th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 879, Rurik established trading routes across Europe, including one in the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland. The Dubliners noted Rurik as being a shrewd bargainer under all his fur and leather with a strong love of ale.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Some scholars identify Rurik with Erik Björnsson, a grandson of Ragnar Lothbrok through Björn Ironside. If so, this would make Rurik a direct ancestor of Eric the Victorious, his brother Olof Björnsson, and nephew Styrbjörn the Strong, and a distant ancestor of Sean Molloy.
