Ruins of Helike

The Ruins of Helike was a partially destroyed sanctuary located east of Patrai in Achaia, Greece.

Duringthe Peloponnesian War, the site was occupied by the Followers of Ares, who had been kidnapping civilians for sacrificial rituals. At some point between 431 and 422 BCE, the ruins were visited by the Spartan misthios, Kassandra, who freed the captives, eliminated the cultists, and looted their valuables.[1]

  • Historically, Helike was a polis that was submerged by a tsunami in 373 BCE.
