Rosta was the mother of Eivor, a Viking who raided southern England during the 9th century.

Biography

At the age of nineteen, Rosta and her partner built cairns together on a high cliff near the fyrd. At some point after Eivor was born, Rosta taught them how to build cairns themself. Rosta explained to the child Eivor the importance of cairns, how they were a test of mind and wit.[1]

Etymology

The name Rosta is related to the Old Norse word rósta, meaning 'brawl, riot, strife'. It's best known as the byname of Olvir Rosta, a character in the 13th century Orkneyinga saga, and thus has also been translated as 'brawler, rioter'.[2]
