The River Exe is a river in Devon, England. The city of Exeter is located nearby the river.

History

During the Roman occupation of Britain, the River was used as a smuggling route by traders.[1]

Vagn brought the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan on a raid in the River Exe in 873.[1] After raiding settlements and forts across the river, Vagn's scouts informed him that the river played a part in the legend of Saint George, leading to Eivor searching for his legacy.[2] She eventually found his shield and cape inside fortifications along the river.[3] Inside Escanceaster Monastery, she also found a clue which allowed her to locate the River Dee in Wales.[4]

In 878, the Hel-hides rode to the Roman ruins on the Exe to meet the Danish kings Oscetel and Appl, who had arrived in the area from Eastern England. The two kings would assist Guthrum's army in providing two secure positions from which to attack Devon, Wiltshire, and Winchester.[5]
