Richard Cromwell (1626 – 1712) was Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1658 to 1659.

Biography[edit | edit source]

After the death of his father, Oliver Cromwell, in 1658, Richard succeeded him as the head of the Commonwealth republic. Richard proved a weak and powerless leader however, abdicating in 1659. This allowed George Monck to begin the restoration of the English monarchy with King Charles II at its front.[1]
