The Portuguese Navy (Portuguese: Marinha Portuguesa) is the naval branch of the Portuguese Armed Forces.
History
During the early 18th century, the Portuguese Navy's principle aim was the protection of Portugal's colonial possessions and trade routes. In the year 1719, a Portuguese fleet battled and lost with Edward Kenway and his ship, the Jackdaw, when he arrived in Principe in search of Bartholomew Roberts. In the same year, Edward Kenway's Jackdaw infiltrated a large Portuguese Fleet in the coast of Mexico and captured the fleet's flagship, the Nosso Senhor da Compreensão, on behalf of the pirate Bartholomew Roberts.
