Ezio 'reasoning' with an Official

When Ezio commits crimes or assassinations, this causes officials, who are normally respected members of the society, or on rare occasions are guards, to declare that they have personally witnessed Ezio committing the crimes they attribute to him, without being true witnesses.

They are involved in the Notoriety system and killing one will silence them permanently, lowering your notoriety by 75%. It is worth noting that Officials are usually aware of your appearance and will flee on sight (though they cannot Free-Run, which would make an uninterrupted chase a short one) , in order to approach them successfully, ensure you are not in their line of sight or are approaching whilst blending with a group of civilians or Courtesans, or you can easily outrun them and end their shame.
