An Animus host[1] is the individual whose genetic memories are relived in a simulation using the Animus, a device that accesses these memories encoded within the DNA of the host's descendants.[2]
Early versions of the Animus required the user themselves to be a descendant of the host.[2] However, technology has since progressed so that there is no longer such limitation.[3] Within the Brahman V.R. framework, the host is called a Witness. Witnesses are in turn classified into Ancestors, who are related to the user, and Echoes, unrelated individuals whose DNA data may be cobbled together via fragmentary genetic sources and Animus algorithms.[4]
Rebecca Crane speculated that the Animus might react oddly if a user were to interact with one of their previous hosts while in a simulation. Rebecca erroneously claimed that Layla Hassan reliving Eivor Varinsdottir's memory of meeting Kassandra was the first instance of this happening.[1]
