In 1739, Nāder Shāh acquired a Piece of Eden in the shape of a diamond when he sacked the Taj Mahal. In awe of its splendour, Shāh named it Koh-i-Noor (Mountain of Light). in 1747, Nāder Shāh was assassinated. In 1830, Shujah Shah Durrani, the deposed ruler of Afghanistan, was forced to give the Koh-i-Noor diamond to Maharajah Ranjit Singh, who in turn reclaimed the Afghan throne for him.
