Nishinomiya Shrine (西宮神社) is a Shinto shrine in Nishinomiya in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.[1] At the time of the Sengoku period, the shrine was part of the province of Izumi Settsu.[2]
History
In 1582, the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe visited the shrine and met the priest Shin'nyo, who told her about the ravenous and "colorful" group of rōnin called the kabukimono who ravaged and wreaked havoc upon the land. As the local daimyō had not paid attention to the issue, Naoe took it upon herself to hunt down the kabukimono.[3] Around the same time, Naoe also entered the shrine to make prayers at various altars.[2]
In 1585, Naoe returned to the shrine with Junjiro after receiving intel from Hattori Hanzō's contact Konatsu about a puppet show that may detail the location of her mother Tsuyu. While there, they caught sight of the puppet show's event and the locals before attending the main show itself.[4]
The show told the story of a young concubine who had come to the island of Awaji and fallen in love with its daimyō. Under her and her retainer's control, their army led a campaign to capture a shinobi who had sought to steal a treasure from the concubine, and ultimately proved successful in apprehending the thief. Deducing the shinobi to be her mother, Naoe realized that Tsuyu must be held captive on Awaji, and promptly sailed to the island to find her mother and the final Imperial Regalia.[4]
