Nie Zheng (聶政; died 397 BCE) was a Chinese assassin who lived during the Warring States period.
Biography
In 397 BCE, Nie Zheng was paid a large sum by the minister Yan Sui who was in the midst of a power struggle with the minister Han Xialei, uncle to Marquess Lie of Han. Zheng succeeded in this assassination[1] although he himself was killed in retaliation for the minister's death. He managed to hold off the attacks, killing at least a dozen men but was eventually subdued and killed.[2]
Legacy
Alongside Zhuan Zhu, Yu Rang, Cao Mo and Jing Ke, he was listed by the historian Sima Qian as one of China's earliest assassins, known to later generations as "the Five Great Assassins."[3]
