Mímisbrunnr

Mímisbrunnr, or the Well of Mímir, was a sacred well inhabited by the head of Mímir and found at the bottom of the tree Yggdrasil, in northeastern Jötunheimr. In truth, it was constructed by Isu scientists and it ultimately led to the creation of multiple Sages throughout history.[1]

History

In the Isu Era, Mimir was beheaded by his captors, but Odin preserved his life through magic and placed Mimir's head at the well near the bottom of Yggdrasil. There, one would need to make a payment before using the well's magical waters.[2]

Later, Odin sought Hyrrokin's help in accessing the Well, wanting to change his future where he was fated to be killed by Fenrir in Ragnarök. After mixing the well's waters with the "Mead", a catalyst necessary to be reincarnated, Odin sacrificed his left eye and squeezed it into the well, ensuring that Yggradsil would remember his life so it could be reborn. Odin thanked Hyrrokin for her aid, and was told that while she also intended to use the Well to save her late partner, her actions would likely lead to Suttungr and Gunlodr ousting her from their group and hunting her forever.[1]

In the Viking Age, Odin's actions and trials to reach the Well were remembered by those who followed Norse mythology.[3][4] When the Norse merchant Thorsteinn Silvertongue was murdered by Bjorn, his amnesia-stricken spirit used the magic waters to remember his past and learn how he came to be in Jötunheimr.[5]
