This article is about the Mercian ealdorman. You may be looking for the fisherman from Ravensthorpe.
"They all fought for thegn Merton. If you find yourself in a pitched fight, call out his name in praise. The workers will rally to you."
―An Anglo-Saxon mentioning Merton to Eivor, c. 874.[src]-[m]

Merton (died c. 874) was a Mercian nobleman who served as ealdorman of Sciropescire during the late 9th century.

Biography

Under the rule of King Ceolwulf, Merton worked with the allied Sons of Ragnar to combat against the invading Britons led by King Rhodri the Great. Merton died in one of the battles against the Britons,[1] and his thegns including Orlaf, Eadric, and Baeldaeg were captured and held at the Dhustone Quarry.[2]

Following his death and the capture of Rhodri's brother Gwriad by Ivarr the Boneless, Merton was replaced by Bishop Deorlaf during the peace talks between the Britons and Mercian-Viking coaltion.[1]
