Melun is a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department of France. During the medieval period, the city served as the home of a clan of Vikings led by Sigfred, and gave its name to the region of Melunois, encompassing the areas west and south of Paris.

History

Melun began as a former Gaulish town named Meledunum in antiquity. When Gaul came under Roman rule, the town was visited by the prominent Roman general Julius Caesar.[1]

Centuries later after the end of Roman rule in Gaul, Melun became part of Kingdom founded by the Franks and the areas surrounding the settlement were eventually settled by Norse people from Scandinavia. By the 9th century, Melun had been settled by a clan of Vikings led by Sigfred alongside his brother Sinric.[1] During the reign of Charles the Fat, however, the settlement came under increasing attacks by the Frankish army who sought to drive out the Norse settlers. The death of Sinric prompted Sigfred to plan and lead a siege on the city of Paris.[2]
