Lykaon was a king of Arkadia in Greek mythology.
History
According to the legends, the king was cruel, and for his wickedness he was cursed by the god Zeus to become a bloodthirsty beast.[1]
Influence
In 5th century BCE, a cave on Mount Psophis in Arkadia was named after him. Fittingly, it was the den of a pack of wolves. During the Peloponnesian War, the misthios Kassandra visited the den, killing the leader of the pack.[2] She also slew a wolf called the Lykaon Wolf at the request of Daphnae, the acting leader of the Daughters of Artemis,[1] fulfilling also a similar request made by King Archidamos of Sparta.[3]
