Louis XVIII (1755 – 1824), born Louis Stanislas Xavier, Comte de Provence, was King of France from 1814 to his death, except for a brief return to exile during the Hundred Days of 1815.
Biography
After Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated, the House of Bourbon was restored as the royal house of France, and Louis took the throne as the constitutional monarch, a title previously held by his brother, Louis XVI, and nominally by his nephew, Louis XVII.[1]
In 1820, King Ferdinand VII of Spain was ousted by a military uprising, starting a period during which a liberal government ruled Spain known as the Trienio Liberal. However, this period ended in 1823 when Louis XVIII ordered the French army to intervene and reinstate Ferdinand's absolute power.[2]
Louis was the last French monarch to die while reigning. Following his death, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Charles X.[1]
