Lei Haiqing (雷海清; died 757) was a Disciple of the Pear Garden (梨園子弟), a Tang-era music academy, and a renowned musician of Emperor Xuanzong's court.[1] He frequently played songs with lyrics derived from Li Bai's poems.[1][2]
In 754, he performed for Emperor Xuanzong's court at Flower and Calyx Pavilion with other Pear Garden Disciples as part of the Flower Banquet.[2][3] After the jiedushi An Lushan rebelled against the Tang, captured the eastern capital of Luoyang, and declared himself Emperor Xiongwu of the Yan, Haiqing was forced to perform for his court in 757. He dared to play songs implicitly lamenting the calamities that had befallen the Tang, a snub that was not lost on Emperor Xiongwu, who furiously ordered him to be dismembered by five horses.[1]
