Leather or hide is the skin of an animal, supple and strong, and it has been used throughout human history as a basic material for crafting such things as clothing, gear, fastenings, and dwellings.
Pelt and fur tend to refer to the the skin of an animal with fur, wool, or hair still attached.
History
Classical antiquity
During the Peloponnesian War, the acting leader of the Daughters of Artemis, Daphnae, charged the Spartan misthios Kassandra to hunt down several legendary animals, and bring their pelts to her as proof.[1] Kassandra also gathered a number of hides in various states, and exchanged them for drachmae at a blacksmith.[2]
According to tradition, the common Medjay badge featured the Eye of Horus painted with white on a simple leather badge.[3] This was also the badge worn by Bayek of Siwa, before he was given a golden badge by Cleopatra in 48 BCE.[4]
Renaissance
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins utilized leather in crafting a number of armor pieces and accessories for use against the Spanish Templars.[5]

Crafting
Leather, like wood, is used as a crafting material across several Assassin's Creed games. 'Leather' seems to be used in the series as a generic term, regardless of real-life distinctions.
In Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Assassin's Creed: Rogue, various different kinds of leathers, hides, and pelts were gathered, traded, and used to craft outfits, weapons, equipment, and ship upgrades.
In Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, most of the crafting materials were generic, including leather, which is required for belts, capes, certain gauntlets and even some weapons.
In Assassin's Creed: Origins, ibexes and birds for example yielded soft leather, whereas hard leather came from crocodiles and hippopotami.
In Assassin's Creed: Odyssey only soft leather was found on the variety of animals populating Greece.
In Assassin's Creed: Rebellion, multiple leather products were required, including tanned leather, hardened leather, and leather scraps to craft various pieces of armor and weapons.
